Ross County 2-2 Morton

Ross County 2-2 Morton
Irn-Bru Division One
Victoria Park, Dingwall
Tue 13th March 2012

Ross County increased their lead at the top of the First Division to twelve points after a 2-2 draw at home to Morton.  However the lead at the top looked to be even bigger with only five minutes of the game left after Michael Gardyne and Richard Brittain had given County a two goal lead.  But with five minutes remaining Morton pulled a goal back, before they were awarded a penalty three minutes into injury time to give Morton a share of the points.

Derek Adams named the same starting line up and subs bench for the sixth consecutive game.

Morton started the team brightly and took the game to County in the opening 10 minutes or so.  And they twice came close to opening the scoring, but Michael Fraser denied them both times, his second save being a brilliant point blank block.
County failed to threaten Alan Combe in the Morton goal int he opening period, but as the game wore on County began to take control, and County were to take the lead just after half an hour.  Paul Lawson's diagonal ball found Iain Vigurs, who tricked way past the defender, before cutting inside, and then cutting the ball back to Michael Gardyne, who fooled the keeper, letting him dive to his left, before slotting the ball the other way into the bottom corner of the net.

County now dominated the rest of the half, and came close to adding a second, but Gardyne' sshot was deflected wide of the bottom left corner.
Paul Lawson also tested the keeper with a long range shot, but a touch of the defender took the pace out of the ball.

Into the second half and County continued to press forward and pass the ball around well.
But it was a dead ball situation that gave County the second goal.  Morton's Marc Smyth fouling Stuart Kettlewell 25 yards from goal towards the left side of the pitch.  Richard Brittain placed the ball before curling it over the wall and finding thee inside of the left hand post - Very similar to his goal he scored at Ayr Utd two weeks ago.

County should have added to their goals, the first chance falling to Richard Brittain when Iain Vigurs' cross found him free at the back post, but his header sailed high over the bar.
Michael Gardyne also missed an open goal, when he was unable to get his feet sorted, and the ball bounced off his heel and squirmed just wide of the bottom corner.

But as the game drew to a close Morton pulled a goal back.  Archie Campbell cutting in from the left, before slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

But deep into injury time, Morton were awarded a corner.  With every Morton player pushing forward, the ball was knocked out to the edge of the box, but the shot back in hit the arm of Iain Vigurs, and the referee instantly pointed to the spot.
Peter Weatherson took the spot kick, sending Michael Fraser the wrong way before slotting the ball into the right side of the goal.

County had one last attack on goal, but Mark Corcoran's cross into the area was headed out before the referee blew for full time.
